Why Print Needs new Ground Rules
On America This Week, Walter Kern and Matt Taibbi discussed 60 minutes‘ edit/collage of the Kamala Harris interview.
“This 60 minutes format is dead”
Walter declared the 60 minutes television format is dead because it required the good faith of the audience and the integrity of the network okay and the producers and the editors
Why Print Needs new Ground Rules:
It’s not just the 60 minutes video format. Walter says he currently avoids print media because they can take a statement you made and make it seem that it occurred in an entirely different context than than when you made it and there’s no way you know there’s no way for the audience to tell
Solution?
Would Walter be more willing to do print media interviews on the internet, if print media agreed that they would:
- publish the full interview transcript and
- use contextual citations for all their print quotes?
War Prayer, by Mark Twain
O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire
Donald Trump will not protect Europe
When Donald Trump was asked whether he would protect European countries that didn’t meet military spending requirements, Trump replied no I would not protect you
.
Conservatives have been repeatedly burned by out-of-context quotations, whether by 60 minutes or elsewhere. This quote isn’t out-of-context, but readers can gain a much better understanding if they view the video context.
- Authors who use CiteIt build reader trust and make it easy for the reader to learn more about a quote’s context.
They’re eating the dogs, they’re eating the cats
After the Trump-Harris debate, the internet responded with songs and remixes of the Trump line
- CiteIt offers the reader the comfort of maintaining their focus within the article, while allowing them to sample media they are curious about.
VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS: .. And I’ll tell you something, he’s going to talk about immigration a lot tonight even when it’s not the subject that is being raised. And I’m going to actually do something really unusual and I’m going to invite you to attend one of Donald Trump’s rallies because it’s a really interesting thing to watch. You will see during the course of his rallies he talks about fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter. He will talk about windmills cause cancer. And what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom. And I will tell you the one thing you will not hear him talk about is you. You will not hear him talk about your needs, your dreams, and your, your desires. And I’ll tell you, I believe you deserve a president who actually puts you first. And I pledge to you that I will.
DAVID MUIR: Let me just ask, though, why did you try to kill that bill and successfully so? That would have put thousands of additional agents and officers on the border.
FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: First let me respond as to the rallies. She said people start leaving. People don’t go to her rallies. There’s no reason to go. And the people that do go, she’s busing them in and paying them to be there. And then showing them in a different light. So, she can’t talk about that. People don’t leave my rallies. We have the biggest rallies, the most incredible rallies in the history of politics. That’s because people want to take their country back. Our country is being lost. We’re a failing nation. And it happened three and a half years ago. And what, what’s going on here, you’re going to end up in World War 3, just to go into another subject. What they have done to our country by allowing these millions and millions of people to come into our country. And look at what’s happening to the towns all over the United States. And a lot of towns don’t want to talk — not going to be Aurora or Springfield. A lot of towns don’t want to talk about it because they’re so embarrassed by it. In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs
. The people that came in. They’re eating the cats
. They’re eating — they’re eating the pets of the people that live there
. And this is what’s happening in our country. And it’s a shame. As far as rallies are concerned, as far — the reason they go is they like what I say. They want to bring our country back. They want to make America great again. It’s a very simple phrase. Make America great again. She’s destroying this country. And if she becomes president, this country doesn’t have a chance of success. Not only success. We’ll end up being Venezuela on steroids.

Matt Taibbi: How do you regain Trust?
In an interview on Rising, Matt Taibbi said how does science recover from this how do you regain trust and it’s similar to what happens in journalism after an episode like for instance the WMD affair or even Russia gate I would argue uh you know once the public is betrayed and they see that they’ve been betrayed it’s very hard to win that trust back and in science it’s it’s the same thing
An Easier Way to Showcase “the Receipts”
1) “The Receipts”
When I told my Mom I was trying to contact Ken Klippenstein. She remarked “That sounds like a Russian-Mennonite name!”
I told her he’s a nepo baby, but I don’t care because he brings the receipts
.
Building Reader Trust:
I’m working on an App to help writers to build trust with readers who are skeptical of their journalism, but persuadable. The App showcases the context of their sources in a visible way, differentiating their work from “mainstream” media. The App doesn’t require the reader to leave the existing article and visit a new page to read the documentation or video. The App reads YouTube video transcripts and enables writers to include an unlimited number of citations per article, whereas there is limited space to embed videos or document within an article.
2) Familiar Quotes: Jack Nicholson:
Besides bringing the receipts, writers can also use the tool expressively: Imagine citing a Jack Nicholson quote that (many) people are already familiar with: You can’t handle the truth
!
Digital Expression: Beyond Emoticons & Animated GIFs
Electronic writing has added emoticons, animated GIFs, audio and video to the new writing medium.
I’m seeking to get feedback from readers and from writers. I’m especially interested in hearing from Ken because his practice of journalism already brings “the receipts” and has someone edit his work. 1
The Design Features of CiteIt: do not require:
- Readers having to go to a new page, which introduces page-flipping friction and requires the reader to locate the quote start within the document and
- Writers having to limit the number “receipts” they post within an article to conserve space, as there is limited space within an article to display videos and document
- Putting “the receipts” at the bottom of the page where they are only visible after an article has been read.
- Copying the Quote context. CiteIt looks up the context, given a link URL.
- Computer Programming to script the popup windows.
About me
I’m a computer programmer and History major, (and Russian-Mennnonite) working on a citation tool I call CiteIt .

I have 5 interview questions for Ken. An important part is understanding whether I need change anything to take into account his Workflow and Editorial process.↩
Contextual Citation Examples
1) Inline Popup: within a paragraph
AI writer uses CiteIt to quote other sources
- David Friedberg read Google AI (Bard’s) answers and David Sacks responded:
So the question is where is he getting these quotes and then why doesn’t it give citations?
- It is the responsibility of the writer to cite their sources. We don’t want AI making up sources for a writer.
2) Blockquote: it’s own block
Briahna Joy Gray commented on delegate Plaskett‘s letter to Taibbi:
It seems very clear that this kind of a letter is an effort to threaten and coerce and punish Taibbi for giving testimony that was inconvenient to the Democratic party and that’s a real problem and it’s exactly what Lee Fong has been warning of this whole time and while he why he’s treated the characterization of Matt’s remarks during that Congressional hearing so seriously saying that it’s not it’s it’s not okay this isn’t just like a Tit for Tat accusing someone of lying
Ep 203: How Corporate Think Tanks Function as Influence Laundromats
this is a very liberal demand which is like can you at least disclose the people know and I think that’s really where you give the game away because if they did that they would be far far less funded and far less influential because they kind of nominal or widely perceived neutrality or or kind of Academia Sheen or branding is what gives them power
